Team-Up for everybodyBIKE celebrates National Bike Month in May

From 2006 to 2011, Team-Up for everybodyBIKE has been Whatcom County’s month-long celebration of National Bike Month in May. Team leaders encouraged friends and colleagues to form a team and bicycle or walk during May instead of driving for trips to shop, work, school, or errands. Winning teams and randomly selected participants won hundreds of prizes, including cash, gifts and equipment.

Out of 115 teams in 2011, the top scoring teams were:

• Alta’s Angles - Hardware Sales (283 points)
• Bellingham Technical College 16 Penny Sinkers (273 points)
• Terra Organica Swimp Swampis (241 points)
• YMCA Department of Fun (218 points)

Team-Up for everybodyBIKE helped increase participation in Whatcom Smart Trips and Bike to Work and School Day. More than 6,000 Whatcom Smart Trips participants have recorded bicycle trips, and in May 2011, Bike to Work and School Day participation soared past 10,000 for the first time ever in Whatcom County. Yay, Team!
